20090315 Rapa Nui, Day 1

Second day on Rapa Nui. The first full day. John and I decide to
take an un-guided bike ride around the island. We didn't actually
literally mean 'around', but ended up riding 1/3 of it. A memorable
ride; location, scenery, and difficulty (which just means I'm out of
shape). I had to walk the bike up the dirt/rock road back to Explora.
I was done, nothing left.
The ride started at Explora. We went up the valley between Maunga Okoro (326) and Maunga Pui (302), then down to sea level. Past Ahu Nau Nau (no photos). Stopped at Playa de Anakena; I thought John left without me, but he was swimming. I took off towards Maunga Puakatiki (370), based on a sign that said Ahu Tongariki was 11km that way. After a mix of dirt/pavement, Tongariki finally showed up. By then I was spent. Stopped at Rano Raraku for some water. Shortly after, John caught up, and we stuggled back to Explora. After lunch (water) and a nap (two hours), John and I took the "cave" tour to the west coast. Passing by (two large volcanic out croppings) Motu Tautara, ending up at Ahu Tahai, just outside Hanga Roa. |
