...where we visited the ruins of Palenque, then had lunch in town.
A full half-day wandering around the ruins at Palenque! After, we went into town and ate lunch -- town is much, much bigger and busier than expected, and we didn't stay very long. I didn't see much of a tourist town here. Swimming in the cool pool finished up the day. |

From Structure XIII (A Forest of Kings, p.224) looking at the Palace in the background, and the Temple of Inscriptions on the right edge.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/400 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
The Temple of Inscriptions. The previous photo was from the top of Structure XIII, near the right edge with the awning. Yes, that's the lens cap attempting to block the sun....
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 17.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Lots and lots of kids where here, trying to sell glyphs of month names. That's Claudia.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/400 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
The Temple of Inscriptions. Too bad they don't let you climb it anymore.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/400 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Our group, the edge of the Palace, and the Temple of the Cross in the background.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/320 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
A back alley in the Palace?
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
The Temple of Inscriptions from the top of the Palace.
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 28.0 mm; 1/320 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Sadly, I didn't bother to block the sun here. The Temple of the Cross on the left and the Temple of the Sun on the right, the Temple of the Foliated Cross is barely visible in the background (under the tree).
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Inside the Palace.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/1000 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Another shot of the Temple of Inscriptions from the Palace.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 16.0 mm; 1/250 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Inside the Palace. The top of the Temple of Inscriptions....I never did figure out how that guy got up there, or what he was doing. Probably a bouncer.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 12.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
No clue what this is, or where it was...except that it was in the Palace. I just liked it.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/1250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Inside the Temple.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/60 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
I liked the colors of the moss here. I think it's just behind and to the right relative to the last photo.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/60 sec, f/4.0, ISO 400
Close up of the moss.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/20 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Another close up. Wouldn't this look good on your wall?
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
The tower in the Temple, through a hole in the wall. For those that know the story, Jack spent $5 just to the left of here. And for those that don't, too bad.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Oh! I know what this one is! It's the Piers of the Temple! The middle portion is NOT closed off in "A Forest of Kings"....
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 28.0 mm; 1/800 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Another view of the tower.
Panoramic. Detail of the "roof comb" on the Piers of the Temple.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
The east face of the Palace. You can clilmb these steps....but it's much easier on the other side.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
The Palace, Temple of Inscriptions, and wares.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 18.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
On the path up to the Group of the Cross ("The greatest project of Chan-Bahlum's reign"). That is likely the Temple of the Cross.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 15.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
Temple of Inscriptions and the Palace, from the path up to the Group of the Cross.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Temple of the Cross, almost from the path. I wandered through the grass to the edge of the trees, and looked back. The path is to the right of the photo.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 12.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
I think this is the Temple of the Sun, but it might be Structure XIV next to it.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
This is Structure XIV, with the Temple of the Sun just visible on the left edge, and the Temple of Inscriptions in the background.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 14.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
The Temple of the Cross, with a gigantic plant next to the Temple of the Sun.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 13.0 mm; 1/1000 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
On top of the Temple of the Cross, there were lots of workers, ummm, working. Cleaning stuff, etc. I guess this is somebodys jacket and machete. That's a shadow of a ladder in the upper left. The patch says "Free Play Training Camp".
A terrible panoramic view from the Temple of the Cross -- it was a bear to stitch together, and seems to float upwards on the left side. Oh well. From left to right, the Temple of the Polliated Cross (barely visable in the trees), the Temple of the Sun, structure XIV, structure XV, the Temple of the Inscriptions (in the background) and the Palace.
Panoramic view from the Temple of the Poliated Cross. Left to right, Temple of the Sun, structure XIV, structure XV, the Temple of the Inscriptions (in the background) and the Palace.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/640 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Postcard! Left to right, the Temple of the Sun, Structure XIV, Temple of Inscriptions (in the background), Structure XV, the Palace. From the top of the Temple of the Cross. Whoops, a litle bright.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/1250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Climb down, climb up. Now on the Temple of the Foliated Cross, we can see stuff that you should know by now, and the Temple of the Cross. Notice the ceremony. And the guy.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 15.0 mm; 1/800 sec, f/5.0, ISO 100
The Temple of the Cross, the Palace in the background. Still notice the guy. Don't call OSHA.
Panoramic view from halfway down the steps to the Temple of the Poliated Cross. Sigh, if only the camera was in focus.
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 119.0 mm; 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Here's the ceremony. The observer intensely watched for about ten minutes. Supposedly, down the road from our hotel ("resort") was a club/bar/hotel/hostel/whatever that was of spiritual significance. Bonfires, dancing, chanting, etc, all night.
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 300.0 mm; 1/320 sec, f/6.3, ISO 100
Here's the guy.
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 300.0 mm; 1/400 sec, f/6.3, ISO 100
Again.
Canon EOS 300D with Unknown 28-300mm at 200.0 mm; 1/400 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Again. More spectators.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/1000 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
The Temple of the Cross, from the base of the steps. These are easy to climb. Still impressive...that's a lot of stone!
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/800 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
Temple of the Cross, from the eastern corner.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 18.0 mm; 1/500 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
There was a path going to I-don't-know, which gave a great view of the Palace. And lots of "merchants". To the right is the Group of the Cross, that we just came from.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 20.0 mm; 1/40 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
Not at Palenque, but at our hotel ("resort"). Barely visible, is an amazing dead tree(s). They're leaning together, across a stream.
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 11.0 mm; 1/100 sec, f/4.5, ISO 400
We had cabins at the hotel ("resort") in pseudo-jungle. Very nice, very, very quiet. Great!
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/80 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
It's easy to imagine how the Maya sites got overgrown. The jungle is quick to take over stuff (fake or not, I don't know -- it looked real).
Canon EOS 300D with Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 at 10.0 mm; 1/250 sec, f/4.0, ISO 800
Maybe now we can see those amazing dead trees. I jumped off the bridge and down into the "jungle" to get this. Dark jungle, bright sky, makes for a tough shot for the amateur.
